ADVOCACY
Advocacy is about people speaking up for or acting for themselves, possibly with the support of another person or advocate.

It is based on a number of beliefs and values:
  • the value of partnership or working together to achieve goals
  • the right to be heard, and have their views respected
  • the right to feel empowered to communicate effectively and powerfully
  • the right to contribute and be included in communities

The Patient Advice and Liaison Service is not an advocacy service but a confidential service providing advice and support to patients, their families and carers. PALS aims to resolve concerns quickly by finding answers to the questions or referring on to appropriate agents or specialist advocacy services.

The GUiDE website provides details of local and national advocacy services.
